First Year Students: Citations and Plagiarism

This guide provides an introduction to Shepard Library and conducting research for first year NCCU students.

Citation Management Tools

Citation management tools allow you to save citations of research as you go and create both bibliographies and in-text citations automatically. You can use these tools for free as long as you are a student at NCCU.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism can be accidental or intentional and is a serious offense. It is crucial to acknowledge when information you are sharing comes from other people, which is why you are required to cite.

Plagiarism can be:

  • Copying someone's words without giving them credit
  • Quoting someone's words incorrectly or out of context
  • Using or repeating someone's ideas without giving them credit
  • Misrepresenting someone's ideas of concepts
  • Copying images or music without permission or proper attribution
  • Intentionally presenting someone else's work as your own

Style Manuals and Related Books

You may eventually need to purchase your own style manual, especially once you have entered your major, but Shepard Library keeps copies of the most frequently used manuals. You can access these by asking at the Reference Desk, on the 2nd floor, and they must be used in the library.
