EDU 3410 CBE: Principles of Teaching Reading: Project 1

Project 1 Competency and Sub-Competencies

Competency: Can describe the major components of scientifically-based reading research (i.e., phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency) as well as the oral language foundations that support early reading.

Sub-competencies:

  1. Students will gain knowledge about the factors that are associated with literacy acquisition during the prereading period.
  2. Students will learn the current methods of assessing and teaching reading and related communication skills in classroom settings.

Deliverable

Develop a week of literacy block instruction for any grade K, 1, or 2. First, you will create a schedule that provides a description of possible activities for each portion of your literacy block. Then, you will support each part of your schedule with a separate commentary that provides evidence from research and state standards. Finally, you will provide an annotated list of resources related to a variety of strands of literacy development at the K-6 level.
