Student Learning Resources

The following resources are Open Educational Resources that are project specific and provide the necessary knowledge base to develop your project and demonstrate your skills. Cite all sources used in APA format.

Project 1 Overview

Steps 1-4

Step 1:  Define Cultural Competence

First, you will create a word cloud that includes a minimum of 25 terms related to cultural competence. The word cloud must clearly represent concepts that are specific to the impact of cultural competence on teachers, students, and the curriculum in elementary schools. Save the word cloud as a PDF to submit below. This step of the project will help you develop a self-reflection paper in step 4.

Step 2:  Define the Components of Cultural Competence

Next, you will develop a concept map that illustrates the four components of cultural competence 1) Awareness; 2) Attitudes; 3) Knowledge; and 4) Skills. Save the concept map as a PDF to submit below. This step of the project will help you develop a self-reflection paper in step 4.

Step 3: Complete the Cultural Assessment Tool

Take the cultural competence assessment tool located in the Skill Building Resources to determine your level of cultural competence. In 1-2-pages, discuss the results of your self-assessment; whether you agree with them or not and the life experiences that have shaped your cultural competence. Save the 1-2-page discussion of your self-assessment as a PDF to submit below. This step of the project will help you develop a self-reflection paper in step 4.

Step 4: Develop an Individual Reflection of Cultural Competence

Using the results of your cultural competence assessment and your knowledge of the four components of cultural competence, develop a 4-6-page self-reflection of your cultural competence. Make sure to include the following in your self-reflection:

  • Explain how your self-concept has been impacted by racism, sexism, classism, etc.
  • Describe the impact of mass media and the education process on your attitudes and beliefs about cultural groups and cultural differences.
  • Give specific examples to illustrate the points above
